Gin fumes have given way to the smell of cocoa at Lange Haven 54, home to the chocolate makers of De Bonte Koe. This specialist shop is where chocoholics can indulge themselves by enjoying some of the shop’s artistic chocolate creations. The bonbons and bouchées (literally ‘mouthfuls’) employ unusual ingredients such as nutmeg, lemon grass, basil, and even real roses. The beautiful final products can be sampled in the coffee and tea room whilst observing the master chocolate makers going about their work in the traditional manner in the open workshop.

The small shop front located at Hoogstraat 166 conceals the wonderful world of Expreszo Coffee and Tea, a speciality retailer offering 120 different varieties of tea and 20 blends of coffee. The varieties and blends are all made from natural ingredients and can be sampled in the shop with a scone, muffin or brownie. Expreszo also offers a wide range of accessories, sweets and gift items. The homemade tea bouquets are a novelty: make-believe bouquets consisting of pouches of tea, candy sticks, mini-muffins, chocolate beans and small bags of sugar. The town’s own blend of tea, ‘Vlammende thee uit Schiedam’, makes a visit to ‘Expreszo’ more than worth it.

Hosman Vins is a wine importer run by wine lovers for wine lovers. Its full range of wines is the biggest in the Rijnmond region and is used for private sales to supply restaurants and for wine tastings. Hosman Vins also sells all the finest champagnes and stocks more than 200 varieties of jenever. People are welcome inside the large wine halls on Westvest, whether it is to buy just one bottle or several dozen cases. Hosman Vins seeks out the story behind the wine as well as continuity. In this regard, the presence of wines, which have now been part of this family business’s collection since 1978, tells its own eloquent story.

As soon as you enter the premises, it becomes clear why this wine shop was chosen by the ‘SlijtersUnie’ (Dutch Wine Merchants Association) as one of the ten best in the Netherlands. Wijnhandel Oranje has one of the largest assortments of wines, whiskies, champagnes and cocktails in Schiedam. It also offers a wide range of drink accessories such as corkscrews, coolers, glasses and thermometers. Staff use their knowledge and experience in order to provide tips and also cater for orders and tastings tailored to suit their customers. This extends beyond the shop itself, as these wine experts also provide several restaurants in the region with wine list advice.

Entering the De Walvisch flourmill and shop is like taking a trip down memory lane. The shop conjures up images of grocer’s stores from yesteryear. Moreover, staff still find the time to stop and chat, dispense sound baking advice, and serve up homemade gingerbread on the terrace. De Walvisch still uses proper milling methods. Almost all its flour and mix products are produced in house, but there are also some popular products from other mills. The shop also stocks other baking necessities, making De Walvisch the perfect specialist for home bakers and eco lovers.

Winkel Nationaal Coöperatie Museum

The entrance to the National Co-operative Museum looks exactly like an original local ‘shop on the corner’ with all kinds of sweets from a bygone age. At the back of the shop there is a small living room accurately depicting how workers lived in around 1920. The top floors of the museum are home to a wealth of information about the co-operative ideal. The archives are still added to regularly though private donations. The museum‘s volunteers are happy to take visitors on guided tours and explain the old product packaging, works of art, black and white photos and utensils displayed in the exhibition.
